The original message was supposed to read: “Can someone mow the lawn before Saturday?” Instead, the chat displayed: “Can someone hire a lawyer before Saturday?”
The first reply came from a neighbor who asked whether the matter involved the front lawn or the “ongoing hedge dispute.” Another neighbor responded with a courtroom emoji. Within three minutes, someone had renamed the chat Patio Legal Department.
A retired accountant volunteered to serve as counsel because he owned a briefcase. A teenager created a case number.
