What Happened
A hamster named Muffin reportedly learned to imitate the family’s doorbell and then used the sound to announce a nightly snack service from inside his habitat.
The discovery happened after Muffin spent several weeks hearing the chime whenever a delivery arrived. He began making a soft two-note whistle from his exercise wheel. At first, the family assumed the noise was a new hamster opinion.
One evening, the chime sounded from the hallway. A family member opened the front door, found nobody there, and returned to the kitchen. Muffin whistled again. This time, he was sitting beside his food dish with the alert posture of a shopkeeper waiting for customers.
The family offered one approved sunflower seed. Muffin accepted it, ran three laps, and repeated the chime. A second seed was delivered. The system had immediately become profitable.
By the end of the week, Muffin’s habitat had operating hours. The doorbell sound meant the bakery was open. A tiny chalkboard beside the cage listed sunflower seeds, cucumber, and “seasonal oat.” The dog was appointed quality control but was not allowed to sample the inventory.
Muffin has since added a closing bell, although nobody knows whether it means the bakery is closed or whether he would like another seed. The family is currently testing a quieter notification system and has stopped saying the word “delivery” near the cage.
