The original post included a blurry porch photo, a description of the gnome’s red hat, and the sentence “please keep an eye out.” The app interpreted that as encouragement, added a running-shoe icon, and pushed the message to residents as “Gnome Goal: 4,000 Steps Before Dinner.”
Rather than question the notification, several neighbors posted step counts, hydration updates, and one photo of the gnome’s empty spot with the caption “he would want us to stretch.” By 6 p.m., someone had created a leaderboard named Lawn Legend League, and two retirees were power-walking past the mailbox with grim competitive energy.
The gnome was later found behind a recycling bin, apparently innocent. The fitness challenge, however, remains active because everyone likes the badge.
