What Happened
A neighborhood planning spreadsheet caused administrative confusion Friday after an autofill error listed “blue trash can by Linda’s driveway” as treasurer for the annual block party.
Rather than correcting the mistake, residents spent nearly forty minutes debating whether the trash can had been nominated, elected, or merely acting in an interim capacity. One neighbor added a comment asking the can to approve napkin reimbursement. Another uploaded receipts “for transparency.” By noon, the spreadsheet included a finance tab, a snack tab, and a solemn note reading, “Treasurer has not objected.”
Why This Matters
Shared documents are powerful civic tools, but they also reveal how quickly adults will build a committee around any cell with a bold border.
Deeper Context
The human treasurer has since been restored. Still, the trash can remains on the guest list as “Finance Emeritus,” mostly because nobody wants to anger the spreadsheet this close to hot dog season.
